If your kitchen sink has clogged up on you, there are some ways you can go about unclogging it yourself. If you find these methods don't work, then it's time for you to call a plumber like Quality Plumbing Inc to come repair your sink for you. Each of the methods below are easy for you to do and can be done without the need for any special plumbing tools.
Try resetting the garbage disposal
If it is the garbage disposal side of your sink that's clogged and your disposal isn't turning on, then it needs to be reset. If it isn't working, then there is a good possibility that a lot of food is stuck in the disposal, causing the clog. Go under the sink and locate the small, red reset button located on the bottom of the disposal canister. Press this button, and if it clicks in then the problem may be fixed. Run the disposal and verify the problem has been taken care of. If not, try the next method.
Try very hot water
You want to start with the easiest method first. If your sink has water in it from the clog, you need to start by removing the water. Then, you can take a large pot full of water that's just ready to boil and slowly pour it into the drain. Once that water goes down the drain, you want to pour another pot or two in after it. This may be all it takes to free the clog. If it isn't, then move on to the next method.
Try unclogging the p-trap
Under the sink you will see some PVC pipes. One of these pipes is going to be in the shape of the letter "P" and this is known as the p-trap. Put a bucket under the p-trap to catch the water that's going to come out the pipes. Loosen the connectors holding the p-trap in place and remove the p-trap. It may be clogged with debris. Clean it out completely and put it back in place the same way it came out. Make sure the connectors are tight and try the sink again.
If you try the methods listed above and you aren't able to unclog your sink, then your next step will be to call out a professional plumber to come fix the problem. They can also advise you on how to stop it from happening again.
